Abstract/Summary

The results of the policy analysis depict that the recent Sri Lankan governments have taken a number of positive policy initiatives to curb Nr pollution caused by the agriculture, industrial, waste, land use, energy and transport sectors in Sri Lanka. However, data shows that emissions from all three nitrogen compounds, ammonia (NH3), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and nitrous oxide (N2O), have been increasing over time in Sri Lanka and elsewhere in South Asia. These results highlight that current policy efforts so far have not yet been able to stabilise or reduce Nr emissions. The report highlights the issues and challenges around nitrogen pollution and management, with recommendations for action.
